NORC at the University of Chicago actively seeksField Interviewers to work on the General Social Survey. The GSS is NORC's longest running survey. Beginning in 1972, the GSS was first conducted annually and is now conducted every two years. Through the GSS, trends and constants in attitudes and behaviors in American society are monitored and explained. Except for data from the Census, the GSS is the most widely analyzed source of information in the social sciences, and is used by policy makers, scientific researchers, government officials, and students. The benefits to working as a Field Interviewer at NORC include * An opportunity to work on an important, national research project. * Field Interviewers talk to people from every conceivable walk of life, in person at their homes and sometimes by telephone to obtain information on issues that will affect social policy * Field Interviewers administer carefully developed, field-tested questionnaires to respondents, either printed or on laptop computers * Training time and expenses are paid by NORC. * Temporary employment with hourly pay and retirement benefits, subject to eligibility. Please see our website for more information about our Field Interviewer position: />Required Skills In addition to meeting specific job requirements, employees hired for this position must present evidence of their identity and authorization to work in the United States (I9 documentation) and must undergo a background check. Also required are: a valid driver’s license, proof of auto liability insurance and unlimited use of an automobile in good working condition; a working home phone number; ability to carry a laptop computer and survey documents and supplies, and availability to attend in-person, paid training sessions (no exceptions). Interviewers must complete a Home-study the day before their travel day. It can be completed in one sitting and requires intensive effort for 6 hours. The day before the travel day should be considered a training date. Training will be conducted at the Oak Brook Hills Resort, Oak Brook, IL. Should you be selected for this assignment, NORC will contact you with more details regarding travel arrangements. Required Experience * Must be organized, an active listener, and detail-oriented. * Must be available to work during the Field Period: Mid-March 2012 through Mid-August 2012. * Interviewers are expected to work productively and efficiently. We expect 25-30 hours each week, a minimum of 3-4 nights a week (5pm-9pm) and at least one weekend day. * No time off will be allowed during the first 10 weeks without approval of both the administrative Regional Manager and Field Project Manager prior to staffing. * Must have reliable transportation with required insurance coverage as well as a good driving history. * Must sign a release allowing a background check and Motor Record Vehicle check and complete security clearance procedures.
